We have unfortunately sent our children to Ysgol Pen Y Garth.
The school is local to us (Penarth) and is the closest Welsh language school. That’s where the positives end (apart from some of the teaching staff – whom are, in my opinion, misguidedly loyal.
It is not always true but the general consensus is that many organisations, from football clubs to nations in fact, can thrive or alternatively will falter at the hands of their leader… this may be true for Pen y Garth.
We can only comment as parents but if you compare the level, quality and timeliness of communication to that of other schools we have now experienced, Pen Y Garth has a lot to learn and indeed a lot that could be, indeed should be, drastically improved.
There appears to be institutionalised and mis-placed elitism, likely borne from the lack of competition (i.e there are no other Welsh schools in the local area); perhaps complacency has set in or the Head has become too comfortable and is too protected. For the sake of the current and future pupil community, something needs to change.
We aware that there were quire a number of parents that took their children out of Pen Y Garth last school year and as the year is progressing we are already in conversations ourselves with another school and are planning to remove our youngest from Pen Y Garth.
How Pen Y Garth (poorly) dealt with the pandemic brought so much home as to how far behind they are or how lacking they are. We were speaking to friends and colleagues that were sharing stories about how their child’s school managed and communicated to them throughout the pandemic. What became painfully apparent was that where before the pandemic there were already gaps in the schools capability/ability that we were aware of, the pressure of the pandemic created or at least exposed great gaping holes . I don’t normally like to point fingers but in this instance, where it is the well-being and future of children at stake, change needs to happen and if that means certain individuals, in seats of authority at the school, having to raise their hands and be accountable, or indeed being forced to admit their failings and seeking help to change, or if it means them falling on their rusty swords… then that is the right outcome, for us as parents and more importantly for current and future pupils whom deserve better and for current and future parents whom deserve more…
Learning Welsh in a Welsh language school should be to the detriment of many other aspects you expect as a basic necessity from a school (timely clear communication, inclusiveness, evidence of pastoral care outwith the confines of school hours).
The school has so much potential and Welsh language schools are needed for the preservation of culture but when it comes to Pen Y Garth something(s) desperately need(s) to change.
